CHAPTER FOURTEEN
My stomach feels like the stage curtain being testedâopen, close, open, close. I keep feeling jabs under my ribs on both sides.
I pull into Kateâs driveway to pick her up for our first rehearsal. She bounces out the door, the curls of her ponytail springing along behind her.
âHey,â she says as she folds her tall frame into my Jetta. âAre we ready for this?â
âYou know it!â I shift into reverse. Iâm nervous as all get out, but Iâm not going to let Kate see that. Itâs time to click into gear and show everyone what Iâm made of. I will prove to Ricardo he made the right choice in casting me.
I turn up the volume and bang my head to the vibration of electric guitars on my stereo.
The auditorium is brightly lit. All the stage and house lights are on. Ricardo sits on stage in a black directorâs chair, flipping through some papers. Jude and Patrick sit in the front row on the right, laughingâthe two male leads, bonding. Kate marches up front and plops her stuff down behind them.
âHi,â Jude says. Judeâs a skinny guy. Heâs about my height, and Iâm guessing, weighs less than me. He has shaggy brown hair, kind of like a Beatles mop top and these cool skinny sideburns. Heâs a sweater kind of guy. Even though itâs summer and heâs wearing a red T-shirt and cargo shorts, I picture him in a sweater.
Patrick nods, dark skin glossy from the heat. He wears his hair cut high and tight, like heâs in the military, and has a huge smile that overtakes his face.
âHi, guys.â I smile.
âHi.â Kate tilts her head.
I donât think Judeâs ever spoken to me before, but thatâs the cool thing about theatre. Weâre all in this together now. Weâre all part of the cast.
Natalie and Brooklyn slide in next to us.
âLadies,â Natalie says, making a big show of swinging her giant, patent leather, designer bag off her shoulder. âCongrats on your parts.â
âThanks,â Kate says politely. âYou too.â
Iâm so tempted to ignore Natalie altogether, but technically the girl hasnât done anything unkind. She just drives me crazy!
âYouâll make a great Cosette,â I force myself to say. I guess I mean it. She can sing. The dark hair works too.
âThanks. You know, I wanted to be Fantine. Sheâs so dramatic, billowing in that white night gown and everything. Think how devastating my cleavage would look popping out the top.â Natalie flips her sleek black locks behind one shoulder.
Is she for real?
âBut I understand a senior should get that. Plus, Iâm new. Everyone would have freaked out if the new girl got that part. Anyway, Cosette gets the guy.â She taps Jude on the shoulder. âAnd youâre that lucky guy!â She winks.
Jude turns the color of Natalieâs lip gloss. Luckily for all of us, Ricardo stands up and clears his throat.
âLetâs give a hand to the cast of Les Misérables!â He claps his hands loudly above his head.
We all join in, cheering and stamping our feet like thundering cattle on the auditoriumâs floor.
